All proceeds from the auction will help benefit the Pump House Center for the Arts, an arts organization that focuses on maintaining the historical Pump House to further serve the Chillicothe-Ross County community as an art gallery, open free admission year round to all guests!

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is:

"What are you doing for others?'"

Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. Let's take time this day to reflect on the great work of Martin Luther King Jr. and ask yourself the same question..."What are you doing for others?"

Try to make it a goal this year to volunteer! Volunteering comes with lots of great benefits! Lots of great volunteers opportunities available around town and at the Pump House Center for the Arts, come get involved! Help serve our wonderful community by joining our team, we'd love to have you aboard!

Today in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. day, read about the life of this great Civil Rights leader! Great kids activities to do as well to educate your little ones on this great leader!

Join us this Thursday for Community Night : An Eye For Margitte, grab the kiddos and come join us for a fun night of Art! All are welcome to attend!

The Pump House Center for the Arts will be closed Monday & Tuesday, and will reopen Wednesday from 11:00 - 4:00 PM!

Live Inspired: An Interview with Whimsical Folk Artist...

About a year or so ago, Amanda did an interview with Abril for her previous art blog, Time For Tea, Love. We recently pulled it back up to share on our blog!

Abril and family will be showing at the Pump House Center for the Arts for the month of January, as previously posted her opening will be this coming Friday from 6 - 8 PM! We encourage everyone (if you are free that evening) to please stop down, meet Abril & Matt (her husband)! We will also have light snacks and beverages for all to enjoy while viewing there wonderful works of art!

About a week or so ago I messaged Abril to see if she would interested in being featured as an artist on my blog, I am happy to say that she thought this was a great idea as well!

I would also like to make the personal comment, that Abril's artwork is some of my personal favorite. As an I am an avid art appreciator, I love her artwork, greatly and it never fails to amaze me! She is an exceptional artist, along with her husband and I am so happy to be featuring her on my blog! Thanks Abril!

This goal of featuring artists and their artwork on my blog is to educate/expose blog readers/internet users to art, as well as to promote the artist :)

"Honestly I could not live with out painting

Favorite Medium(s):
My favorite medium is Acrylics with a mixture oils, I like painting on chipboard and paper more then I like doing it on canvas.

Did you attend an art school or college? If so what was your art major and any experiences you'd like to share.
I attended a Fine Art school in Spain and I was studying for Art Applied to Murals, unfortunately I did not learn what I actually do for a living, I had to learn on my own by studying paintings and practicing.

Do you consider yourself a self taught artist? If so, please explain.
I've have learn over the years what I do now, painting a lot , and with every painting getting a little better and learning new techniques, I have learn a lot from my husband and by looking at other artist work. Trying to figure out how they got the shading like that or how did they do this etc..... Just looking I guess, and letting my head try to figure out how paint like they do.

Have you participated in art exhibitions? If so, please feel free to list some.
I have been part of a few Exhibitions over the years, I took a break last year but I'm back on track looking for more exposure.

Being publish on several art books and magazines. :)

What messages do you try to convey to your art appreciators/the world, through your art?
I am not sure what messages i give to people that look at my work, i love to paint , honestly i could not live with out painting i enjoy it soo much i have to paint or start painting something every day or i will freak out a little :P.

What are some things that inspire your art? Every day life, Children books , my husband and Daughter.

Are there any genres of art or artists or specific art pieces have inspired you through your career as an artists? My inspirations change from time to time but those I draw inspirations include my husband Matt Griffith, Salvador Dali , Mark Ryden, Colin Christian, Joe Capobianco, Frida Kahlo ,Marion Peck, Trevor Brown, Margaret keane , Jackson Pollock.

Any advice you would like to share with artists around the world?
Being a painter and living off your work is not the easiest job in the world takes time to make a name for yourself, but if you love what you do and you enjoy it. All you have is time :) The rest will come on it's own.

It wasn't about 8 months or so when this very bright, talented young artist first stepped into the Pump House Center for the Arts with her family! What a wonderful day that was meeting her, and speaking to her about the Pump House Center for the Arts, our mission along with great conversation about her artwork! Since first meeting Katelynn, it has been an honor to continue working with her and seeing the progression of her artwork! Currently, Katelynn is our featured artist on the Pump House's website!

Here is a little bit about this talented full of life artist! With a bright smile and a heart of gold...

"I think at this point, I've come to realize life is what you make it. But also what you let God make it. I miss my daddy everyday. I absolutely adore my brother Joshua and I couldn't be more proud of ny little sister Sarah ... I'm trying to find myself in Jesus. Right now I'm giving myself permission to love me, and for me to heal. That way, I can love others better. I always want to reflect the character of Jesus ... It isn't always easy ... So, that's that. I am in love with Jesus .. and I think science and God go hand in hand."

Katelynn Ann Tiso was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. She started painting during her senior year of high school while she was living in St. Louis, Missouri. To her surprise it became her passion. Today Katelynn is twenty years old and has been painting ever since her senior year.

She has been living in Chillicothe, Ohio for three years. Since living in Chillicothe, Katelynn’s love of God and Jesus Christ has become very strong. Her love for God, and how he speaks through her, is what inspires most of her artwork. Katelynn believes that when she paints rest of the world can take something from it, maybe some peace, freedom, or inspiration for life. She feels at peace when she paints, and she honestly feels closer to God every time she paints.

Southern Ohio Storytelling Arts and Music Festival: On the lawn of the Pump House Center for the Arts, September 8, 9, and 10th!

Storytelling concerts will start on Thursday evening and continue throughout the day on both Friday and Saturday.

During the day on Friday, concerts for the schools will be held in a tent in Yoctangee Park at the Pump House Center for the Arts in Chillicothe's Yoctangee Park. These concerts are free of charge for area fifth- and sixth-graders. Community members, including students in other grades, are welcome to attend with a ticket and the public venus is at the Pump House. Fifth and sixth grade students who are home-schooled, or from schools not attending the event, can receive free admission with proof of grade level.

The Friday evening performance will be a “sampler” of each storyteller in the tent at the Pump House Center for the Arts in Chillicothe's Yoctangee Park. During the day on Saturday, concerts will also be held in the Yoctangee Park at the Pump House Center for the Arts. And throughout the day, amateur storytellers and visitors can tell their own tales at “Story Swappin’,” an ‘open mic’ event.

Downtown Shop & Stroll: Join us for a night of the Arts here at the gallery! Downtown Shop & Stroll will be September 10th from 5 - 9 PM! This month we will be featuring the Southern Ohio Storytelling Arts & Music Festival on the lawn of the Pump House, inside the gallery we will be featuring the Annual Hills Competition! Catering will be provided by Southern Comfort Catering!

Community Night: Here at the Pump House we are working to transform each Thursday evening from 6 - 8 PM into a community night held here at the gallery! The History of the Pump House Center for the Arts

The Pump House Center for the Arts is housed in the former Pump House of the Chillicothe Water and Sewer Co. The Pump House was constructed in 1883 as a municipal pumping station for distribution of water from the deep well field located in Yoctangee Park to a reservoir situated on Carlisle Hill. In March 1977, the Pump House was placed on the Ohio History Inventory. On November 15, 1979, it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places kept by the U.S. Department of Interior. The Pump House was used by the Jaycees group for its annual Haunted House fund-raiser until it was condemned in 1984 as unsafe. A group of artists, preservationists, and an attorney formed a coalition to restore and preserve the building. In 1986, City Council designated the Pump House as part of the city’s Preservation District. Coursework was replaced, bricks were repaired, floors were poured, electricity and water was installed, and the walls were rebuilt. The rooms were transformed into a beautiful art gallery where works could be displayed. The Pump House is an example of Victorian Gothic architecture, featuring a large central tower, Palladian windows, common-bond brick, and a low-pitched, hipped slate roof.

"GROWTH" - 2011 Annual Hills Competition

What does "Growth" mean to you? This is the theme that was presented to area artists to interpret at this year's annual Hills Competition at the Pump House Center for the Arts. Artists submitted paintings, photography and sculptures capturing their interpretation of “Growth”. Many local artists, such as Kathie Bunch, Roxanne Poe, Ellie Cummings, and Angie Terry are featured. Artists such as Patrick Sims, Cindy Manzi, Lance Adkins, Norma McCombs, Ellen Doerres, Suzi Cunningham, Christy Conkel, and Michelle Pocock included an artist statement detailing how their piece relates to the theme.

“The artist statement is an optional component to the show,” states Priscilla V. Smith, Pump House Director. “ The public viewing the exhibition are so intrigued by the artist statements. It gives the viewer an insight to the artist’s creation.”

The competitive show was judged by Ohio Arts Council recommended Melissa Vogley Woods. Ms. Woods has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Kansas City Art Institute and is currently completing her Masters of Fine Arts in Printmaking at Ohio State University. Her solo shows have been featured throughout the State of Ohio and most recently her solo and two person shows were exhibited in Dresden, Germany and Berlin, Germany, respectively.

The winners of the competition were announced the night of the opening reception on Thursday, August 18th. Congratulations to Patrick Sims' and his work of art "Into the Woods" which placed first, Angie Terry who's piece "Kazuri Rhythm" placed second and to Cindy Manzi who's piece "Wildflowers at the Maxwell Barn" placed third in the competition - and to all the artists who entered this year's competition, congratulations on such beautiful works of art! Thanks to all of our wonderful guests Thursday evening who came to support the opening of the show and the Arts!

Pack up day has arrived for the New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music Exhibition!

The exhibition will be leaving the gallery tomorrow, August 4th and making it's way north to Kent State University in Burton, Ohio!

If you were unable to see it at the Pump House Center for the Arts, no worries it will be at

Kent State University from August 6 - September 6, 2011!

We would like to thank all of our wonderful guests who attended the exhibition while it was on display at the Pump House!

11th Annual EARTH GATHERING

What is Earth Gathering?

Earth Gathering is a free community arts festival held annually in April on the lawn of the Pump House Center for the Arts in Yoctangee Park (downtown Chillicothe, Ohio).

This event was designed to entertain, educate and inspire the public about nature, creativity, and sustainability through Earth-friendly art, music, food, products and ideas. Quality, affordable hand-made art and great music (from local and regional artists) highlight this 7-hour festival. If severe weather is forecast for Saturday, the event will be postponed until Sunday.

It all follows the annual "Scioto Waterway Cleanup" 10-Noon starting in the annex.

This is a kid-friendly event. Please keep it clean--on every level. Alcohol is prohibited park wide.
